The East Cape is a remote and largely unpopulated area, with beautiful coastal scenery, rocky foreshores, driftwood strewn beaches as well as safe sandy swimming beaches.  Maori settlements in the area still follow the traditional ways and the marae is still the centre of community life.  Jan can direct you to the landing place of the Tainui and Arawa canoes, where the first Maori landed in New Zealand.  (pictured above with Cape Runaway in the distance).   Cape Runaway is privately owned land, and not accessible by road, however we can arrange an historical walk with the owner.  June is a wealth of knowledge on the area plus the Te Whanau Apanui and Ngati Porou tribes. She will  take you to visit the local marae after your walk.
